How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

Compilation: Ortelius's reduction of Jenkinson 1562 (previous record) with eight text blocks retained.

Research notes

  • Rumsey note: 8 blocks of text, 3 within cartouches.

Why it matters

The plate through which Jenkinson's Tartaria reached Europe for forty years; the Rumsey 1570 impression complements the LOC 1570 Theatrum (item 2003683482), the LOC 1914 reproduction, and the University of Tartu copies located via Europeana (1570: hdl.handle.net/10062/2492; 1573 issue).
