How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

Compilation: Ortelius drew on Jenkinson (1562), Gastaldi and Polo; the 1603 issue is a late impression of the 1570 copperplate.

Research notes
  • Same copperplate as M004 (LOC copy in the 1570 Theatrum, item 2003683482); LOC catalogue dates the sheet 1570 while the imprint note says 1603 edition (both recorded).

Why it matters

Documents that the 1570 Tartariae plate (M004) stayed in print through the 1603 Vrients edition; the same copperplate, so not an independent witness, but the later hand-coloured state and verso text are useful for tracing how 'Tartaria' was explained to readers c.1600.
