How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

Compilation from published surveys and travel reports; no observation by the mapmaker.

Research notes
  • Klaproth's revisions rest on Chinese and Manchu sources (Jesuit surveys, Qing gazetteers) read by him; Rumsey transcribes the name as 'Ktaproth' (catalogue typo).

Why it matters

Klaproth's revision of the northern and Chinese parts of Fremin's Asia is the orientalist-corrected base on which the SDUK 1838 sheets explicitly drew ('Sources: Klaproth'); it is the closest available witness to Klaproth's own Central Asian cartography since his 1836 Carte de l'Asie centrale was not found in the searched collections.
