Research notes
  • Sheets dated 1829 though the atlas was compiled 1820-1827; engraved by several hands (Ivanov, Faleleev, Eremin). Rumsey lists no separate Kirghiz steppe sheet; the steppe is shown only as frontier.
  • Frontier key on the Orenburg sheet: I-K Владения Киргиз Кайсаковъ / les domaines des Kirghiz-Kaisak; H-I Область Омская / Province d'Omsk. Bilingual legend.

Why it matters

The standard Russian official atlas of the 1820s: its Orenburg sheet fixes the imperial boundary against the domains of the Kirghiz-Kaisaks and its Siberian sheets against China, documenting the administrative frontier at the moment the older Tartary label had vanished from Russian state maps.

Places named

Russian Empire by province; Orenburg, Tomsk, Irkutsk provinces; Kamchatka; the Kirghiz-Kaisak domains as outer frontier
