How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

Compilation from published surveys and travel reports; no observation by the mapmaker.

Research notes
  • Derived from Arrowsmith and SDUK; first issued c.1831-35 and reprinted with updated dates.
  • Rumsey note: Engraved, with colored margins of countries. Shows cities, place names, roads, rivers, lakes, and islands. Relief shown with hachures.

Why it matters

British 1844 counterpart of the Tanner/Mitchell title; Teesdale's atlas is a separate engraving from the Tanner plate, so it is a second (though also derivative) 1840s witness to the persistence of the label.

Places named

Russia in Asia; Independent Tartary; Chinese Tartary; Siberia
