Research notes

Compiled from Sanson and Jesuit material; the Mercurio Geografico collects Cantelli plates with variable dates (Rumsey: pagination not continuous).
Rumsey note: Outline hand colored Detailed map, with decorative title cartouche. Relief shown pictorially. Shows administrative divisions, cities, towns, rivers and mountains. Includes notes. Pagination is not continuous, see the index.

Why it matters

Italian state of the Sanson/Jesuit picture of Tartary with an explicit source statement in the title; useful for showing how late-17th-century compilers cited Jesuit and travellers' reports rather than any Tartar authority.
