Compilation: De Wit's plate combines the Blaeu/Jansson Tartaria model with Martini's 1655 China and Jesuit Japan; no observation.
Research notes
- Derived from Blaeu 'Tartaria sive Magni Chami Imperium' and Martini; similar plates by Visscher, Danckerts and Schenk are not independent witnesses.
- Found via LOC search 'Tartariae' (3 hits).
Why it matters
Representative of the late-17th-century Dutch 'Magna Tartaria' plates that repeated the Blaeu/Jansson model until Witsen's 1687 map replaced it; useful as the pre-Witsen state of knowledge.
