How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

Compilation: enlarged re-engraving of Sanson's 1652 Grande Tartarie with updates; no observation.

Research notes
  • Derivative of Sanson 1652; the Mortier (Amsterdam) 1708 issue is a pirated/licensed re-engraving of Jaillot's Paris plates.

Why it matters

Shows the French Sanson-Jaillot state of Tartary at the moment Delisle (M007, 1706) replaced it; the two side by side document the shift from compiled tradition to Russian-informed mapping.

Places named

Grande Tartarie; Tartarie Moscovite (Siberia); Tartarie Independante; Tartarie Chinoise; Caspian; Ob; Amur
