Why it matters

The scholarly (Ritter school) map of the region c.1833-40: no Tartary, but Mongolei and Mandschurei as physical-ethnographic units, drawn from Klaproth, Jesuit surveys and Russian sources; the academic counterpart to the SDUK's 'Chinese Tartary'.
