Research notes
- Same copperplate as Tanner 1836 (Rumsey images 0980065, 7858063) and Mitchell 1846-1855; LOC holds the 1844 Carey and Hart atlas (item map45000245). Derived from Arrowsmith and Pyadyshev-based European maps.
- Rumsey note: In full color by region. Engraved. Relief shown by hachures. Inset of Western Part of Russia.
Why it matters
American 1845 state of the 'Russia in Asia and Tartary' title: the word Tartary survives in the title while the map body colours Russian governments and the 'Chinese Empire'; the plate passed to Mitchell in 1846 and was reissued to the 1850s (see next records), which is why the same image appears across the 1840-1850 gap.
Places named
Russia in Asia (Siberia); Tartary (Kirghiz steppe, Khiva, Bukhara); Chinese Empire; Mongolia; Manchuria; Kamchatka
