How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

compilation: Japanese redaction of Ricci's 1602 Kunyu wanguo quantu with added katakana glosses and Japanese commentary

Research notes
  • LOC dates c.1785; editions of 1788 and later reprints exist (Waseda, NDL copies). Katakana glosses are Nagakubo's additions; the outline is Ricci's 1602 with Dutch-derived corrections in the north.
  • Labels read: 歐邏巴, 亞細亞, 韃靼, 北高海, 大乃河, 女人國, 夜人國, 大寒地, 氷海, 北亞墨利加; Japanese preface mentions 萬曆二十九年 (1601) and the Mito engraver.

Why it matters

Shows how the Ricci nomenclature, including the 韃靼 Tartary label north of China and the Caspian as 北高海, reached Japanese readers of the 1780s; a key East Asian relay of the European Tartary concept.
