How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

compilation of Siberian administrative surveys, Cossack reports and informant testimony by the Tobolsk cartographer; ethnonym blocks are Remezov's own synthesis

Research notes
  • Rumsey's note reads Rossiiskii Gosudarstvennyi Muzei, Ermitazhnoe sobranie, f.256 no.346, l.27; f.256 no.346 is in fact the RSL Rumyantsev-collection shelfmark of the Chertezhnaya kniga Sibiri itself (see the IA scan of that manuscript), so the leaf is most likely the ethnographic sheet of the 1701 atlas, not of the Hermitage Sluzhebnaya kniga; the title in the record should be checked against leaf 23 of the atlas. Colour and south-up orientation are original.
South is at the top.

Why it matters

The clearest Russian-made pre-1701 map that writes Velika Tartaria as a region label between Muscovy and China, surrounded by ethnonym blocks (Mungaly, Kalmyks, Kazach'ya Orda, Bukhara, Kitai, Bogdoi), so it documents what a Tobolsk official meant by Great Tartary; the sister of the chorographic book (M028) and the 1701 atlas (M006).

Places named

Siberia; Tobolsk; Great Tartary; Muscovy; China frontier; Mongolia; Kazakh steppe; Kalmyk lands; Perm; Samoyed north
