How we know

mixed Part firsthand observation, part drawn from other sources.

Mixed: Strahlenberg's own observations and Swedish prisoners' surveys in Siberia 1711-1722 (see W002), Russian informants, and compilation for Chinese Tartary and Central Asia.

Research notes
  • Strahlenberg's data were partly shared with Messerschmidt and Russian officials; the map's eastern and Central Asian parts rest on informants and earlier maps. Later states: Homann Heirs c.1739 copy; 1750 reissue (Gallica). The e-rara Ryhiner copy and the Bern copy are impressions of the same plate.
  • Found via Gallica SRU dc.creator Strahlenberg (6 hits, incl. e-rara DOIs) and Europeana (9 hits for the 1730 book: BSB, ONB, NK CR).
  • Also recorded independently by the maps noneuropean pass: Europeana record and Gallica IIIF image (2200 px) fetched and inspected (gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b5962769b).

Why it matters

The map that accompanies W002: the first Western map of Siberia and Great Tartary based on residence in Siberia, and the base for Homann's Imperii Russici et Tartariae universae tabula (c.1739, separate record). It keeps 'Tattaria Magna' as the overall label while subdividing by peoples, which is the usage the 1745 Atlas Russicus abandoned.
