How we know

compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.

compilation: reduction of Witsen 1687 map with the Ides embassy route added; issued with the Dutch Ides 1704 and later

Research notes
  • Gallica attributes different states to Ides and to Witsen; e-rara catalogue dates 1673 and 1720 bracket rather than date the sheet. Record both attributions.
  • Related to W006 (Ides English 1706). The Dutch Ides text (Driejaarige reize, 1704) not located in this pass: see candidates.

Why it matters

Links the English pass W006 (Ides travels) to Witsen's cartography: the map that carried Witsen's Siberia and the Ides route into eighteenth-century atlases. Useful for tracing how Witsen's toponymy for Tartary spread.
