Die Voelker Asiens und Europas (The peoples of Asia and Europe), Physikalischer Atlas, 8th section, Ethnographie no. 1, 1847
Die Volker Asien's Und Europa's. 8te Abtheilung: Ethnographie No 1. Gotha, bei Justus Perthes. 1847.
Heinrich Berghaus, Gotha (Justus Perthes)
How we know
compilation Assembled from earlier sources. The author did not observe it directly.
Compilation: ethnographic-linguistic synthesis (Klaproth, Ritter, Humboldt) mapped by language families; no observation.
Research notes
- Compiled from Klaproth's Asia polyglotta and Ritter; a synthesis, not a survey. Rumsey copy is the 1849 issue of the atlas.
- Rumsey note: A large full color map of Europe and Asia showing the ethnographic distribution of people with an accompanying chart.
Why it matters
Fills the 1845-48 gap with the map that replaced 'Tartary' by ethnolinguistic classification: Berghaus colours peoples rather than a Tartar region, which is the scientific vocabulary the presentation can contrast with the popular atlases of the same years.
Places named
Europe and Asia; Turkic, Mongol, Tungusic, Finnic and other groups across Siberia and Central Asia
