Research notes
- Compiled from Russian (Pyadyshev, Academy), Chinese-Jesuit and British sources; Rumsey note records a tipped-in Tibet panel on this copy.
- Rumsey note: In outline color. Left section of the map has a panel tipped in showing Tibet. The corresponding section has not been put in place on the right hand side.
Why it matters
The best-informed British map of inner Asia in the 1840s: Arrowsmith drops 'Tartary' as a title in favour of 'Northern Asia' while the SDUK, Teesdale and Tanner keep it, which is direct evidence for the terminological split of the decade.
Places named
Siberia; Mongolia; Chinese Turkestan; Tibet (tipped-in panel); Kirghiz steppe; Amur
